Questions A Leader Should Ask
Last week I wrote about the 5 conversations you need to have. Many of you have asked what kind of questions you should ask during these conversations.
I have put together a list of kick-starter questions that will help you have the 5 conversations.
Personal Questions:
- How do you feel you are doing in your role here?
- What are some areas you feel like you’re not being used to your fullest potential in?
- What do you feel is your greatest asset you bring to the table?
Futuristic Questions:
- If you were operating at your fullest potential what would that look like?
- What do you need to stop doing so you can do more of something else of greater value?
- What needs to change for you to grow to a higher level?
Challenging Questions:
- What is holding you back from growing?
- Why did you use the phrase/word _________? (listen to limiting words they use) examples: “I don’t think we can…” “I’m not sure we can get there.” “I think it’s too big.” Basically, anything that limits their belief.
- What areas do you know you have to get better in?
Encouraging Questions:
- How can we utilize more of your unique ___________ (fill in the blank with their unique skills, talents, strengths, etc…)
- Where do you feel you have made the most contribution on our team?
- How can I make you feel more valuable and appreciated?
Accountable Questions:
- What areas do you want to be held accountable to improve?
- What do you need to do moving forward based on our conversation?
- What are 2-3 specific things you want to work on until our next meeting?
Remember, to always lead with questions more than you do answers. This isn’t the time for you to monologue, it’s a time to dialogue together. The more you engage them and lead them to the next level by asking questions the more meaningful it is to them. They need to feel that they are creating their future with your help.
