Catch The Leadership Wave
My wife and I went to the beautiful island of Maui on our honeymoon. One of the highlights of our trip was driving “The Road to Hana,” which is a famous route that goes around the entire island. It took us about three hours to complete the route in our rented Ford Escort. About halfway through the journey, we pulled over at the top of a cliff to watch the windsurfers out on the ocean. It was incredible to see these people doing all kinds of tricks and moves on the waves. Periodically, there would be moments of calm on the water when the waves died down. The surfers would then wait for the next big wave as they floated in the water. As I watched, I observed how much surfing is based on momentum. Even the best surfers in the world are limited by seas which become as smooth as glass. These surfers certainly had the skills and potential to perform incredible tricks, but they were restricted by the lack of wind and waves. They didn’t get discouraged and give up when the waves died down; they were patient, knowing that more were on the way. And, as soon as the waves started to come in again, they were up and surfing.
Influencers are like surfers: they are momentum seekers. They look for ways to catch opportunities which will create momentum and put points on the scoreboard. A professional surfer will calmly wait for the perfect wave to come along. They know how to read the waves and determine which will offer the best opportunity. Many times, a surfer will pass on a perfectly good wave in order to catch a great wave, and when they see it, they quickly paddle out and seize the moment. Therein lays momentum. It is in that pivotal moment that they find the momentum which will carry them to new, daring heights.

Momentum is your ally. When you have momentum on your side, everything you do seems to work. Momentum makes you look better than they are. Momentum puts wind in your sails. It enables you to go further and faster. It takes your team and your organization to greater places. When you have momentum on your side, it feels like nothing can stop you. You dream bigger and are willing to risk more.
However, where there is a lack of momentum, even the best ideas have difficulty gaining traction. Lack of momentum is a person’s worst enemy. It makes someone look worse than they really are. It is very difficult to move forward without momentum.
So how can you spot and catch these waves of momentum?
The answer to this question is one reason why I wrote my new book 5 Ways To Get A Raise…to help people understand how to catch the wave of influential momentum. Get the book here and start to build your future possibilities.
