Why Leaders Never Do Anything Alone
One of the greatest leadership truths you’ll ever learn is this: leaders never do anything alone.
Leadership is not about tasks. Leadership is not about titles. Leadership is not about telling people what to do. Leadership is about people.
At its core, leadership is the art of helping people become more than they currently are. It’s about pouring into others, developing their potential, and creating opportunities for them to grow. Great leaders understand that their success is ultimately determined by the success of the people around them.
Too many leaders fall into the trap of doing everything themselves. They believe they’re being efficient. They believe they’re saving time. They believe nobody can do it as well as they can. But every time a leader does something alone that could have involved someone else, they may be withholding an opportunity for growth.
- When you solve every problem yourself, you rob someone else of the opportunity to learn how to solve problems.
- When you make every decision yourself, you rob someone else of the opportunity to develop judgment.
- When you carry every responsibility yourself, you rob someone else of the opportunity to increase their capacity.
The goal of leadership is not to build followers. The goal of leadership is to build leaders.
I’ve often said, you are only as good as the people around you. The strongest organizations are not built on one talented leader; they are built on leaders who develop other leaders. Great leaders understand that potential is developed more than it is discovered. People grow when someone believes in them, invests in them, and gives them opportunities to stretch beyond their comfort zone.
Why Leaders Must Stop Doing Everything Alone
Many leaders become the bottleneck in their organization because they refuse to let others participate.
They become overwhelmed, exhausted, and frustrated because they are carrying responsibilities that should be shared with others. The irony is that the more a leader tries to do alone, the less effective they become. Leadership is multiplication, not accumulation.
Your influence expands when you develop the capacity of others. Charles Schwab once said that his greatest asset was his ability to arouse enthusiasm in others and bring out the best in people. Great leaders understand that developing people creates greater results than simply completing tasks themselves.
When leaders invest in people, they create future problem-solvers, future decision-makers, and future leaders.
Five Ways Leaders Can Never Do Anything Alone
1. Invite Someone Into Every Opportunity
Before you tackle a project, ask yourself:
“Who can I bring with me?”
Every meeting, project, presentation, challenge, and opportunity can become a development opportunity.
- Instead of handling a customer issue alone, bring a team member with you.
- Instead of making a presentation alone, allow someone to co-present.
- Instead of solving a problem alone, invite others into the discussion.
Development happens through exposure. People cannot become what they never experience.
2. Delegate Development, Not Just Tasks
Many leaders delegate work because they’re overwhelmed. Great leaders delegate because they’re developing people. There’s a huge difference.
Don’t just hand someone a task. Explain the purpose behind it. Give them ownership. Allow them to make decisions. Coach them through the process. Delegation should not be about getting work off your plate; it should be about growing capacity on theirs.
3. Give Consistent Feedback
People cannot improve what they do not understand. One of the greatest gifts a leader can provide is feedback. Feedback is not criticism. Accountability is not punishment. When leaders consistently provide encouragement, coaching, and direction, they create guardrails that help people stay on the path of progress.
Your team needs your feedback more than your silence.
4. Look for Hidden Potential
Many leaders only see people for what they currently do. Great leaders see people for what they could become.
- Look beyond the job description.
- Ask questions.
- Discover hidden strengths.
- Identify unique combinations of talent.
- Challenge people to do things they never imagined they could do.
Sometimes the greatest leadership moment is helping someone see potential in themselves that they never knew existed.
5. Create a Culture of Growth
People stay where they feel they can grow.
One of the primary reasons employees leave organizations is not compensation; it’s because they don’t see a clear path for development and advancement. As leaders, we must continually communicate possibility. We must help people see a bigger future.
Hope is one of the greatest gifts a leader can provide. When people believe there is more ahead of them, they begin to pursue it with greater passion and commitment. Great leaders become dealers in hope, continually helping others see what is possible.
The Leadership Challenge
As you go through your week, I want to challenge you with a simple question:
What are you doing alone that someone else should be learning alongside you?
Look at your calendar.
Look at your responsibilities.
Look at your projects.
Where can you invite someone in?
Where can you expose someone to a new opportunity?
Where can you give someone room to grow?
Remember, leadership is not measured by what you accomplish alone. Leadership is measured by what continues to grow because of the people you developed.
The greatest reward of leadership is not building your success.
It’s building leaders who will someday exceed it.
Because leaders never do anything alone.
