The Power of the Third Idea: How Great Leaders Innovate Together
Let’s get one thing straight: your first idea isn’t your best idea. And neither is the second. The magic happens with the third idea.
Here’s what I mean…
When you step into a conversation with someone to brainstorm or solve a problem, you bring Idea #1. It’s your initial thought—your gut instinct, your vision, your proposed solution. It’s valuable because it gets the ball rolling. Without it, there’s no discussion. But by itself, it’s incomplete.
Then, as you share your idea, someone else offers Idea #2. It’s their spin on your concept or maybe something entirely different. Now the pot is starting to stir.
But don’t stop there.
What comes next—Idea #3—is where the gold lies. Idea #3 is the collaborative mashup of the first two. It’s not a compromise; it’s a creative explosion. It’s where your insight combines with someone else’s wisdom to create something you never would’ve gotten to alone. That’s the third idea—and it often turns out to be the best idea.
This is why it’s so important to bring your ideas to the right people. Not just any people. The right people. People who add value. People who sharpen your thinking. People who aren’t afraid to challenge, stretch, and refine what you bring to the table. You’re not abandoning your idea—you’re elevating it.
Too many leaders live in one of two extremes:
- They only trust their own Idea #1 and never seek input.
- Or they ignore their own insight and adopt someone else’s Idea #2 without contribution.
Both paths are dead ends. One is prideful. The other is passive. But leaders who pursue Idea #3—those are the ones who change the game.
Don’t settle for the first thing that pops into your head. And don’t just run with someone else’s suggestion without adding your own brilliance. Collaborate. Iterate. Innovate.
Shoot for the third idea.
That’s where the breakthroughs happen, my friends!
