The Bold/Humble Rule

The Bold/Humble Rule

October 24, 2023 Posted by John Barrett

The Bold/Humble Rule

Effective communication is critical to any successful team. It allows ideas to flow, problems to be solved, and relationships to thrive. However, good communication within a team takes more than just speaking up. It also requires being able to listen and receive feedback with humility.

This is where the Bold/Humble Rule comes in. It states that team members should be bold enough to say what needs to be said but also humble enough to receive what is being told to them by others. By following this rule, teams can create a culture of open and effective communication.

Boldness: Speaking Up with Confidence

Being bold means having the courage to speak up and share your ideas, even if they may be unpopular or challenging. It is about having the courage to challenge the status quo and offer alternative perspectives. When team members are bold, they contribute to a culture of innovation, growth, and continuous improvement. They bring fresh ideas to the table, sparking creativity and pushing boundaries.

However, being bold also means speaking up in a respectful manner. It’s not a license to say anything you want without regard to others. Remember, it’s not what you say but how you say it that makes the difference. It’s important to consider other team members’ feelings and opinions when expressing your own. This not only shows humility but also strengthens teamwork.

Humility: Listening and Receiving Feedback

On the other hand, humility is the key to being a good listener and receiving feedback from others. It’s about recognizing that you don’t have all the answers and being open to learning from others. It is the ability to receive feedback, acknowledge mistakes, and learn from others. When team members are humble, they create a safe space for open and honest conversations. They understand that no one has all the answers and that collaboration is crucial to success.

When receiving feedback, staying open-minded and not becoming defensive is important. This allows for honest and constructive communication within the team. It also shows that you value the perspectives and opinions of your team members.

The Bold/Humble Rule: A Framework for Effective Communication

Now, let’s put these two traits together and create a framework for teams to follow when it comes to communication. Here are three steps to implement the Bold/Humble Rule within your team:

  1. Speak Up with Confidence: Encourage team members to speak up and share their ideas, even if they may differ from the majority. This creates an environment where all voices are heard and valued. Continually encourage those who are timid to contribute their thoughts and opinions by inviting their input.
  2. Listen and Receive Feedback with Humility: Emphasize the importance of active listening and remaining open-minded when receiving feedback from others. This allows for healthy communication and growth within the team. Acknowledge and point out when someone is listening well so they and others can see the model in real-time.
  3. Collaborate and Find Solutions Together: Once all perspectives have been shared, work together as a team to find the best solution for the given situation. This creates a sense of unity and promotes teamwork. Continuously foster a culture of communication by talking about the rhythm of boldness and humility working together.

The Power of the Bold/Humble Rule

Implementing the Bold/Humble Rule within your team can improve communication, strengthen relationships, and increase productivity. It allows team members to feel safe and comfortable expressing themselves, leading to more innovative ideas and solutions.

This rule also promotes a culture of continuous learning and growth. Team members can learn from each other and improve their skills by being open to receiving feedback. This not only benefits the team as a whole but also individual members in their personal and professional development.

So remember, be bold enough to share your thoughts and ideas but also humble enough to listen and learn from others. Embrace the Bold/Humble Rule and see its positive impact on your team!
