Ego: A Leader’s Worst Enemy

Ego: A Leader’s Worst Enemy

January 23, 2024 Posted by John Barrett

Ego: A Leader’s Worst Enemy

As leaders, we often underestimate the value of teamwork and rely on ourselves too much. We can easily begin to make excuses for why someone else can’t do a job as well as we do, as we dismiss the capabilities of others. But why? The answer lies in…ego.

Ego may not show up as the arrogant pride we typically think of, but it still sneak attacks within us. It whispers in our ears, convincing us that we can do it better alone, that our way is the only right way. But the truth is that ego will never lead to scalable success. True success is only built on the foundation of teamwork.

The words of Theodore Roosevelt ring true: “The best executive is the one who has enough sense to pick good men to do what he wants to be done and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it.” Trust your team to deliver, and resist the urge to micromanage. Not only will this lead to better results, but it will also build trust within your team and create a more positive work environment.

Here are a few tips to help you combat your worst enemy, ego:

Use We Instead Of Me

Consider your leadership language. Do you emphasize “me” or “we?” You invite unity and togetherness by shifting the focus from yourself to the collective. When leaders use “we,” it signifies a strong team dynamic and a promising future. Listening to them using “me” and “I” is a sign of a siloed dynamic and a limited future.

Give Credit To Them Instead of You

Even if you’re the one who created something, always credit the team. Recognize the contributions and efforts of others. After all, even if you were the one who put it all together, everyone had a role to play. Embracing a”we” mindset empowers and motivates your team to achieve greatness. Always look at everything you do as a team effort and give credit to the team as often as possible.

Listen To Those Around Even If You Don’t Like Their Ideas

Effective teamwork also means welcoming diverse perspectives and ideas. Don’t be afraid to challenge your own assumptions and embrace new ways of thinking. This leads to better outcomes and fosters a culture of innovation and growth. Don’t think you have the corner on the market for everything you do. Bring outside invoices into the conversations you have surrounding brainstorming and planning.

Embracing teamwork requires us to overcome our own egos and recognize the value of those around us. By shifting our focus from “me” to “we,” we can build stronger teams, achieve better outcomes, and reach new heights of success. So, let’s unleash the power of teamwork and create an unstoppable force for positive change and growth.
